America’s Everyday Ethics Guy: Beware of Unethical Speakers and Consultants
Naples, FL – "The prevalence of layoffs in recent years has resulted in a glut of unemployed professionals calling themselves consultants and speakers. The unsuspecting association or firm may find themselves victims of charlatans," according to professional speaker, adviser, and author of the upcoming book Everyday Ethics, Everlasting Consequences (Insight, January, 2008) Vince Crew.

"There are at least two forces at work: decision makers attempt to get conference speakers and consultants on-the-cheap and fledgling or start-ups in the field, desperate to pay bills and establish a client base. These two will find each other out of convenience. Unfortunately, the client's desired results may be sacrificed by engaging those who pretend to have the experience and abilities as insightful practitioners or the practitioner," he went on to say.

Crew says, "Given the internet, it's easy for someone to read a few books, articles, and pick up enough buzz words to dupe unsuspecting clients. It's only after the event or later in the engagement that they find the so-called expert is providing nothing more than book reports and cursory gleanings from articles." His advice is a follows:
  • Verify practitioner's website information (IF no website, that should be a 'red flag').
  • 'Yahoogle' them – a Yahoo or Google search should reveal information concerning published quotes, articles, stories, or books about or by them.
  • Check references offered by them, ask local or familiar peers whether they know about the person's performance.
  • Don't be impressed by credentials only. Get feedback concerning results.
  • Does the 'chemistry,' professionalism, and business demeanor of the practitioner meet your standards?
As someone who leveraged a twenty plus year career into a successful business, Crew also reminds decision makers to, "beware of professors and retirees looking for something to 'do on the side' or 'give themselves something to do.' The very best speaker or consultant is one who's livelihood and reputation is based entirely on delivering results."
