Leadership Success: Not Platitudes, Just Attitude
I'm not one of these ultra optimistic, motivational, the glass is always half FULL kinda guys; however, I do believe giving up, giving in, and giving out is the last act of a successful man. In other words, I'll try anything legal to pull off a surprise victory.

As I reflect on starting my own business over a decade ago, I must tell you, it was out of determination, not business planning. It was based on a possibility, not a sure-fire thing. It was born out of a need to be more than an employee, regardless of the executive level to which I had risen.

It was empty platitudes, but an unstoppable attitude that made the business successful. That attitude was driven by confidence tempered with humility, strong individualism tempered with help from a lot of people, and a conviction to my values tempered with a faith that an honest endeavor can become reality. Along with attitude come other traits:

Fortitude: Nothing is guaranteed, but without determination and perseverance, absolutely nothing is guaranteed.

Gratitude: The notion of the 'self-made man' was a concept created by only two people: a very arrogant one and a very ignorant one. Every successful man will point to a list of people who encouraged, supported, and inspired him along the way. There are literally thousands of people who have spoken, applauded, smiled, sacrificed, and cried at every step on the journey.

Altitude: So how high do you want to REACH? It does make a difference. The higher you choose to go, the more sacrifices you will find yourself making in terms of relationships, getting a life, and having a well-rounded quality of living. This is not to suggest limitations, only to acknowledge the sacrifice depending on the goal.

Aptitude: While you may start out with an idea, a talent, an angle, without constant learning and development, you'll stagnate. Over the years I've been amazed at how much I've intentionally and accidentally learned and the skills I've honed.

Latitude: Risk is a determinant factor in the success and failure. Being willing to take a bold risk to get ahead can often be the difference be mediocre and stellar achievement. Beware however, not to risk your reputation or the values that created it. There is always a range of possibilities for making decisions, but those choices must be grounded on principles that you're not willing to compromise.

Achieving any worthy goal is an arduous journey fraught with ups and downs and the only real satisfaction comes at the end when you realize you've taken chances and pushed yourself far beyond the average person's desires and willingness.
